The Week Design Got Cheap (In the Right Way)
Claude Design launched this week. The pitch is simple: describe what you want, get an interface, a visual, a layout — polished, iterated, ready. What used to take hours, days, entire weeks now takes ten minutes.
Without final refinement, sure. But ten minutes, friends.
I watched the reaction split in real time. Half the design community calling it the end of the profession. The other half quietly celebrating — because they understood something the first half missed.
Why This Doesn't Feel New to Me
I've been on commercial sets since 2012. Pichorra Filmes, founded with Lisandra Barros — she's an art director by trade. I've watched her and other art directors solve visual problems with a speed and taste that nobody who doesn't live in that world can replicate.
I've also watched the industry tell entire categories of creators they were obsolete. The DSLR told traditional film crews they were gone. They weren't. Canva told agencies that visual identity was dead. It wasn't. AI editing told post-production houses they were finished. They aren't.
Every time the floor of a craft drops, two things happen at once. The gatekeepers panic. And the people who actually have taste get more work, not less.
The Actual Math of Claude Design
What used to require a full briefing cycle — creative kick-off, moodboards, art direction, first round, revisions, second round — can now start with a functional visual in the room. Not the final piece. A starting point good enough to react to.
That matters because the real bottleneck in design was never execution. It was alignment. Getting a client, a brand team, and a creative team to agree on a direction before any serious work begins. Claude Design compresses the "show me what you mean" phase from weeks to minutes.
For a designer with real taste, this is a force multiplier. They skip the part of their job they never loved — the fifteenth variation of a banner — and spend their time on what actually makes the work good.
For someone who was only selling the execution hours, the floor is in trouble. That's the honest version.
The More You Know, the More Absurd Things You Can Make

Claude Design amplifies what you already know. If you understand typography, grid systems, brand architecture, visual hierarchy, emotional tone — the tool makes you faster at executing things only you could have thought of in the first place.
If you don't know any of that, it generates generic. Competent-looking, sure. Shareable on LinkedIn, sure. But generic.
This is the same thing I wrote about AI video a few months ago, and it's just as true here. The tool democratizes access. It does not democratize taste.
What I'm Doing With It
At Open Your AIs and Soul Symple, I'm running a production where design used to be a bottleneck — interfaces, landing pages, social visuals. With Claude Design in the stack, a rough version of anything I need exists in ten minutes. I bring in human designers when the project needs final refinement, brand alignment, or something that will live in front of a paying audience.
My team didn't shrink. The work expanded.
Projects I was putting off because "we don't have a designer for that this month" now move. The designers I work with are busier, not less busy — because now they get the 20% of any brief that actually needs them, instead of the 80% they never wanted to do.
It's Not the End of Designers. It's the End of Selling Hours.
The designers who are terrified are the ones who built their business model on selling hours. Hours of variations, hours of revisions, hours of execution.
The designers who are thrilled are the ones who built their business on taste, judgment, and the specific ability to know what's worth making. For them, Claude Design is exactly what I described AI to be six months ago: leverage, not replacement.
What used to take days or weeks now takes ten minutes. Not the finished piece. The starting point.
If your job was the finished piece, you're fine. If your job was the starting point, the ground moved under you this week.
And honestly? The ground moved under me too, the first time I tried to build a product without a development team. I wasn't a programmer. Vibe coding opened a door for me. It was patético how much I screwed up in the beginning — I'll be the first to admit that. But I kept going because I knew there was a product I wanted to make that only I could make.
